The short version

Left on Read has no accounts, no sign-in, and no ads. Your reading progress, streaks, and story transcripts are stored on your device.

What leaves your device

• Story chats, sent to Google's Gemini AI. Every character in the app is written by Google's Gemini AI. So that a character can reply, the app sends the following to Google, through our own server, each time you send a message:
  • the messages you type in that story, and the conversation so far;
  • the first name you give a character, if you tell one — this is only ever what you type into a chat, and is never read from your device, your contacts, or your Apple Account;
  • your answers to the app's opening questions about how you text (reply speed, whether you double-text, and similar), so characters text you the way you text;
  • your device's local time, so a character can notice it is late where you are.
  Nothing else is sent: no contacts, no photos, no location, no device or advertising identifiers, and nothing that identifies you personally. The app asks for your permission on first launch, before any of this is sent, and will not contact Google until you agree. Google processes it solely to generate the reply, under Google's API terms, and does not use it to train their models. As our processor, Google is bound by those terms to protect this data to the same standard described here: it is used only to produce the reply, it is not used to train their models, and it is not sold or passed on to anyone else. We do not store your prompts or transcripts on our server — it keeps only anonymous counts of how many requests and tokens were used. Your transcripts stay on your device. We never sell your data. Even so, don't type real personal information you wouldn't want processed this way.
• Purchases. Subscriptions are processed entirely by Apple. We never see your payment details.
• Daily stories. The app may fetch the day's story from our server. This is a plain content download; no personal data is sent.
• Subscription status. Your purchase receipt and a random install ID (your Support ID) are processed by RevenueCat so your subscription unlocks reliably across reinstalls. No name, email, or payment details are involved.
• Anonymous usage counters. The app tells our server when a feature is used, such as "a story was opened" or "the paywall was shown", so we can see which stories people enjoy and where the app loses them. These are bare counters: they carry no account, no device identifier, no advertising ID, and no content you typed, and they cannot be linked to you or your device by us or anyone else.
• Story photos. Some stories include photos, which the app downloads from our server like any other story content. No personal data is sent to fetch them.
• Ad measurement, only if you allow tracking. When you first reach the paywall, iOS asks whether Left on Read may track you. If you choose Allow, your device's advertising identifier and purchase events are shared with Meta so we can measure which ads brought readers to the app. If you choose Ask App Not to Track, no identifier is shared. The app works identically either way, and you can change your choice anytime in iOS Settings → Privacy & Security → Tracking.

What we don't do

• No tracking without your explicit consent via the iOS prompt.
• No selling of personal data.
• No accounts, and no profiles tied to your identity.

Notifications

If you allow notifications, the app schedules local reminders from your unfinished stories. These are generated on your device.

Deleting your data

Delete the app and everything stored on the device is gone. There is no server-side account to delete.
